A recent report from a leading Children's Hospital states:

• 4 out of 5 children admitted to hospital because of a fall from a window were under 5 years;
• 80% had fallen more than 2 metres;
• 80% had significant / severe injuries;
• 3 out of 5 cases admitted to hospital were boys;
• About half of the cases were associated with furniture near the window.

There are steps you can take to prevent children from falling from windows:

• Securely fix window guards that have a set of bars each spaced less than 100mm apart over the window opening;
• Ensure windows cannot be opened more than 100mm by an adult (window stops);
• Make sure that window guards or stops can be moved to allow for escape in an emergency;
• Children can be badly cut by running into glass in low windows - low windows should have safety glass installed or be covered with a shatter resistant film or a window guard;
• Keep objects that a child can climb or stand on away from windows, such as furniture and boxes;
• Be aware of hazardous window when visiting other homes. Closely supervise your child.
